De Nieuwe KHL

Where captains, crew, and passengers used to enjoy a warm meal back in the days, today, it still offers that same hospitality to the neighborhood residents. We designed a spatial identity with a new bar, furniture, and color scheme.

Despite the new look, De Nieuwe KHL continues with the same old-fashioned atmosphere that has formed this building throughout the last century. The Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd (KHL), located at the Oostelijke Handelskade in Amsterdam, has served as a base to weary sailors from all over the world since 1917. The combination of the old Dutch building and the exotic history give a distinct character to De Nieuwe KHL.

At De Nieuwe KHL, exotic passion is effortlessly mixed with Dutch humdrum.

Floorplan

The vibrant colors of the interior are in sharp contrast with the raw port area of Amsterdam East. Pink wainscoting, olive green stucco, and purple-blue details are all featured in the exotic color scheme. The bar is made from traditional green glazed bricks and old-fashioned rattan. Every day, familiar faces gather around the light wooden countertop with messing details to catch up over a Dutch gin or tequila.

Color study on ambiguous tones that work for both an exotic and Dutch atmosphere.
The bamboo stage hosts concerts and other social gatherings.
Blue and purple color details on the original construction.
