Roast

Roast, an intimate coffee bar in Alkmaar’s historic city center, is designed as a statement against the exclusive hip hotspots. The people who knew Roast before its reopening, knew that it was a place where everyone felt welcome. Schoolgirls met up for a latte macchiato, tourists enjoyed a quick espresso break, and retirees appeared every morning for their ten o’clock coffee.

We took the diversity of the customers and personal service as a starting point and designed an interior that matches this warm character. Roast is not your typical hipster coffee bar, because loyal customers shouldn’t be scared away because of a high threshold. Like every Italian espresso bar, Roast is all about coffee – which is why the bar takes up a prominent place in the design.

The counter consists of walnut colored boxes placed in a steel frame that glimmers a faint shade of gold. On the frame lies a countertop made from a plastic rig mat, looking like classic granite but with a colored, synthetic layer over it. The angled, cut-off tables match with the wood used in the bar and give the space a quirky character.

A light and welcoming entrance with high and low seating is perfectly suitable for to-go drinkers and flex workers. For those who seek a little more privacy, we made a beautiful lounge area in the back of the shop. The walls, decorated with a handmade Chinese peacock wallpaper, truly give this place an old-school feel.

La Domenica, a short film

We took inspiration from classic Italian furniture, with dark wood, dark steel, and brass detailing.
